The Context — The History
Elisha served during Aramean wars when IsraelThe nation chosen by Yahweh as His own covenant people, descended from Jacob (Israel) and formed into a distinct identity at Sinai. In the biblical worldview, Israel is God’s allotted portion among all nations after Babel (Deuteronomy 32), set apart to reveal His character, law, and redemptive plan. Dothan was a town where prophets trained, and Syrian armies saw Elisha as a strategic threat because of his divine insight.

Aramean soldiers surrounded Dothan to capture Elisha. His servant panicked at the army, but Elisha prayed for opened eyes to see horses and chariots of fire—then assured him the heavenly host outnumbered the enemy.
