The Context — The History
Nahum prophesied against Nineveh about a century after Jonah. Assyria had oppressed many nations, including IsraelThe nation chosen by Yahweh as His own covenant people, descended from Jacob (Israel) and formed into a distinct identity at Sinai. In the biblical worldview, Israel is God’s allotted portion among all nations after Babel (Deuteronomy 32), set apart to reveal His character, law, and redemptive plan. Israel carries the promises given to Abraham, the mission of representing Yahweh... More and Judah. Nahum announces that the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Chapter 1 opens with an acrostic poem celebrating God's power over nature and nations. In the midst of descriptions of judgment, Nahum declares that the Lord is good — a refuge for those who trust Him in trouble.
