The Context — The History
Cain and Abel lived in the earliest period of human society outside Eden, when worship, agriculture, and family loyalty were forming patterns for generations to come. God's question to Cain establishes that private violence cannot be hidden from the Lord and that brotherly responsibility is not optional.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
Both brothers brought offerings, but God regarded Abel's and not Cain's. Cain's anger grew dangerous, and God warned him that sin was crouching at the door. Cain ignored the warning, murdered Abel in the field, and then tried to evade accountability when God confronted him.
