Tefillin (תְּפִלִּין), also called phylacteries, are ritual objects used in Judaism to obey the Torah’s command to keep God’s words close to heart, mind, and action. Each tefillin contains parchment scrolls with key passages from the Torah, including:

  • (the Shema)

The most important of these is , the very text Jesus cites when teaching the Greatest Commandment.

The Command Behind Tefillin

The Torah instructs Israel:

“Bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.” ()

This command follows immediately after:

“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.” ()

And:

“Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” ()

Tefillin are therefore a physical expression of the Shema — a way of embodying devotion to God with the hand (action) and head (thought).

How Tefillin Are Worn

There are two tefillin:

  • Shel Yad — worn on the arm, facing the heart
  • Shel Rosh — worn on the forehead, symbolizing the mind

This mirrors the structure Jesus uses in the Greatest Commandment: heart → soul → mind → strength.

The arm tefillin aligns with strength and action. The head tefillin aligns with mind and thought.

Tefillin in Jesus’ Day

Tefillin were widely used in Second Temple Judaism. Jesus refers to them when criticizing the Pharisees:

“They make broad their phylacteries…” ()

The issue was not the practice itself — Jesus never condemns tefillin — but the showmanship behind enlarging them for public display.

Theological Significance

Tefillin represent:

  • The physical embodiment of the Shema
  • The unity of thought and action
  • The binding of God’s word to daily life
  • A visible reminder of covenant loyalty
  • The connection between Torah devotion and lived obedience

Because tefillin embody devotion, memory, and covenant identity, they naturally highlight several core realities:

  • Ritual boxes containing Torah passages
  • Worn on arm and forehead during prayer
  • Fulfill
  • Connected directly to the Shema ()
  • Referenced by Jesus in
  • Symbolize unity of mind, heart, and action
  • Express physical devotion to God’s commandments
