Pagan (from Latin paganus, “country dweller,” later “non‑Christian”) describes the religious practices of the nations surrounding Israel and the Roman world of the New Testament. Paganism was not one unified religion but a vast network of gods, temples, rituals, myths, and regional cults.

In the Old Testament, paganism is the primary spiritual threat to Israel. The nations worship:

  • Baal
  • Asherah
  • Molech
  • Chemosh
  • Dagon
  • The “host of heaven” (sun, moon, stars)

These systems involved idolatry, divination, temple prostitution, and sometimes child sacrifice. God repeatedly warns Israel:

“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” ()

The prophets condemn pagan worship because it replaces the living God with created images:

“They have no knowledge… their god is a graven image.” ()

In the New Testament, paganism forms the religious environment of the Roman Empire. Temples to Jupiter, Mars, Diana, and Caesar fill the cities. Pagan festivals, sacrifices, and emperor worship are woven into daily life. This is the world Jesus refers to when He says:

“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” ()

Rome’s gods, symbols, and emperor cult were pagan expressions of political power.

Paul confronts paganism directly. In Athens, he sees the city “wholly given to idolatry” () and declares that God “dwelleth not in temples made with hands” (). In Corinth, he warns believers to avoid pagan feasts and idols (). In Ephesus, the gospel threatens the cult of Artemis, causing a riot ().

Theologically, paganism represents:

  • Worship of creation instead of the Creator
  • Human attempts to explain the divine through myth
  • Spiritual deception rooted in idolatry
  • The contrast between God’s covenant and the religions of the nations

Paul summarizes paganism’s core problem:

“They worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator.” ()

Because paganism embodies idolatry, false worship, and the religious world surrounding Israel and the early church, it naturally highlights several core realities:

  • Non‑Jewish, non‑Christian religious systems
  • Polytheistic worship of many gods
  • Centered on idols, temples, and nature deities
  • Condemned by the Torah ()
  • Confronted by prophets ()
  • Dominant in the Roman Empire
  • Opposed by Jesus’ teaching on true allegiance ()
  • Challenged by Paul in Athens, Corinth, and Ephesus
