The Law of Moses is the body of divine instruction that God gave to the nation of Israel through His servant Moses. Following Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, God established a covenant with His people at Mount Sinai and revealed the commandments by which they were to live:

“And God spake all these words, saying.” ()

The Law formed the basis of Israel’s worship, government, morality, and covenant obligations before God.

The Law is primarily contained within the first five books of Scripture, often called the Torah or Pentateuch:

  • Genesis
  • Exodus
  • Leviticus
  • Numbers
  • Deuteronomy

Although Genesis serves mainly as historical background, the commandments of the Law are chiefly revealed in Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

At the heart of the Law were the Ten Commandments, written by God upon stone tablets and given to Moses on Mount Sinai:

“And he gave unto Moses… two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.” ()

These commandments established foundational principles concerning worship, morality, justice, and relationships.

The Law of Moses also included detailed instructions concerning sacrifices, festivals, priesthood, purity laws, civil justice, property rights, inheritance, and the administration of the covenant nation. Through these commandments, Israel was called to be a holy people:

“Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.” ()

The Law distinguished Israel from the surrounding nations and established a framework for covenant obedience.

The Levites and descendants of Aaron were given special responsibilities in administering the Law. They taught God’s statutes, maintained the Tabernacle and later the Temple, and oversaw the sacrificial system:

“They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law.” ()

Because of their ministry, the knowledge of God’s commandments was preserved throughout the nation.

The Law also contained blessings for obedience and warnings for disobedience. Moses declared:

“I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil.” ()

Israel’s history repeatedly demonstrates the consequences of either following or rejecting God’s covenant instructions.

The New Testament explains that the Law served an important purpose within God’s plan of redemption. The Apostle Paul wrote:

“Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ.” ()

The sacrifices, priesthood, feasts, and ceremonies of the Law pointed forward to the coming of the Messiah, who would fulfill their deeper meaning.

Jesus Himself declared:

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” ()

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Christ fulfilled the righteous requirements and prophetic symbolism contained within the Law of Moses.

The Law of Moses remains one of the most significant revelations in Scripture. It reveals God’s holiness, justice, righteousness, and covenant faithfulness while providing the historical foundation that ultimately leads to the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
