The Context — The History
is a penitential song of ascents, cried from the depths. Pilgrims approaching Jerusalem knew sin could block fellowship with God, yet they waited with total being for the Lord who forgives and speaks hopeful word to those who fear him.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
The psalmist pleads from deep distress, acknowledging that no one could stand if God marked every sin. He waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for morning. His whole being waits, and hope rests firmly in God's word of forgiveness and redemption.
