The Context — The History
Saul was Israel's first king, anointed to lead against Philistine threats. When he failed to carry out God's command against Amalek fully, he returned offering sacrifices, assuming ritual could substitute for obedience in a crisis of leadership and trust.
The Narrative — The Lead-Up
God rejected Saul for sparing Agag and the best livestock. Saul claimed the animals were for sacrifice at Gilgal. Samuel confronted him with one of Scripture's clearest statements that God values obedient hearts above religious performance without submission.
