Astrology is an ancient system that attempts to read human meaning from the positions of the sun, moon, planets, and constellations. Unlike astronomy, which studies the heavens as God’s ordered creation, astrology treats celestial bodies as sources of personal guidance, omens, or spiritual influence.

Scripture draws a sharp line between observing the heavens (astronomy) and attempting to interpret fate from them (astrology). The sun, moon, and stars were created with specific functions:

“Let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.” ()

These signs relate to God’s appointed times, agricultural cycles, and covenant markers — not personal horoscopes or mystical predictions.

Astrology appears throughout the ancient world, especially in Babylon, where astrologers, star‑readers, and diviners formed part of the king’s advisory class. When Nebuchadnezzar demands an interpretation of his dream, the astrologers fail completely (), demonstrating the emptiness of their craft.

God directly rebukes Babylon’s astrologers:

“Let now the astrologers… stand up and save thee… Behold, they shall be as stubble.” ()

This passage exposes astrology as powerless in the face of divine judgment. The heavens declare God’s glory (), but they do not reveal personal destiny or spiritual secrets.

The New Testament continues this distinction. Jesus warns against seeking signs for personal validation (), and the apostles condemn divination and occult practices (). Astrology belongs to the category of forbidden spiritual systems that attempt to bypass God’s revelation.

Historically, astrology influenced many cultures, but biblical faith consistently separates creation signs from divinatory signs. The heavens are ordered, meaningful, and symbolic — but never tools for predicting individual fate.

Theologically, astrology represents:

  • Human attempts to control destiny apart from God
  • Misuse of the heavens for divination
  • Confusion between creation’s order and spiritual authority
  • The danger of blending cosmic symbolism with occult practice

Because astrology embodies divination, spiritual misdirection, and misuse of celestial signs, it naturally highlights several core realities:

  • Interprets celestial positions as influences on human destiny
  • Forbidden in Scripture as a form of divination
  • Babylonian astrologers repeatedly fail ()
  • Rebuked by God through Isaiah ()
  • Contrasts sharply with astronomy’s lawful study of creation
  • Heavens created for signs and seasons, not horoscopes ()
  • Represents human attempts to gain spiritual insight apart from God
