The Tribe of Issachar was one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, descending from Issachar, the son of Jacob and Leah. The tribe became known for diligence, wisdom, and practical leadership, playing an important role in the religious, agricultural, and political life of Israel.

Before his death, Jacob pronounced a blessing over Issachar:

“Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens.” ()

He further described Issachar as recognizing the goodness of the land and willingly laboring to enjoy its benefits (). This blessing portrayed the tribe as strong, industrious, dependable, and productive.

During Israel’s wilderness journey, the Tribe of Issachar camped on the east side of the Tabernacle alongside Judah and Zebulun (). These tribes formed the leading division whenever Israel broke camp and journeyed through the wilderness.

When the Promised Land was divided under Joshua, Issachar received territory in the fertile Jezreel Valley and surrounding regions (). This inheritance contained some of the most productive agricultural land in Israel, making the tribe prosperous and influential.

The Tribe of Issachar demonstrated loyalty during the period of the Judges. When Deborah and Barak led Israel against Sisera, the leaders of Issachar joined the battle:

“And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah.” ()

Their support contributed to Israel’s deliverance from Canaanite oppression and revealed their willingness to stand with God’s appointed leaders.

Issachar’s greatest distinction appears during the rise of King David. As tribes from across Israel gathered to recognize David’s kingship, Scripture states:

“And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do.” ()

This remarkable statement has made Issachar synonymous with wisdom, discernment, and spiritual insight. The men of Issachar possessed the ability to understand circumstances and provide wise direction for the nation.

Moses also blessed Issachar before his death:

“Rejoice, Issachar, in thy tents.” ()

This blessing emphasized prosperity, stability, and the enjoyment of God’s provision within their inheritance.

Following the division of the kingdom after Solomon, Issachar became part of the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Although the tribe eventually experienced the Assyrian invasion alongside the other northern tribes, its legacy endured through Scripture’s testimony concerning its wisdom and understanding.

The history of the Tribe of Issachar reminds believers that godly discernment is a valuable gift. While some tribes became famous for military achievements or political power, Issachar gained recognition for wisdom, understanding, and the ability to guide God’s people during important moments in history.
