The Tribe of Asher was one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, descending from Asher, the son of Jacob and Zilpah. The tribe received a rich inheritance in northern Canaan and became associated with prosperity, abundance, and the blessings of God.

At Asher’s birth, Leah declared:

“Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed.” ()

His name reflected joy and blessing, themes that would later characterize the tribe’s prophetic inheritance.

Before his death, Jacob spoke a blessing concerning Asher:

“Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.” ()

This blessing pointed toward abundance, fertile land, and agricultural prosperity. The territory eventually assigned to Asher would prove exceptionally productive, supporting vineyards, grain fields, and olive groves.

During Israel’s wilderness journey, the Tribe of Asher camped on the north side of the Tabernacle alongside Dan and Naphtali (). Though not among the most prominent tribes politically, Asher remained a faithful member of the covenant nation and contributed to Israel’s military strength.

When the Promised Land was divided, Asher received territory along the northwestern coast of Canaan (). The inheritance stretched from Mount Carmel northward toward the region of Tyre and Sidon. This location provided access to fertile farmland and important trade routes.

One of the most remarkable blessings upon the tribe was spoken by Moses shortly before his death:

“Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.” ()

This reference is often understood as describing the abundance of olive oil produced within Asher’s territory. Moses continued:

“Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.” ()

These words emphasized security, endurance, and divine provision.

Despite these blessings, the Tribe of Asher did not fully drive out all of the Canaanite inhabitants from its territory:

“Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho.” ()

As a result, many Canaanites remained among them, creating ongoing spiritual challenges for the tribe. This failure reflected a broader pattern among several tribes during the conquest period.

Although Asher is mentioned less frequently than tribes such as Judah or Ephraim, it remained part of Israel throughout biblical history. Notably, the New Testament identifies Anna the prophetess as being from the Tribe of Asher:

“And there was one Anna, a prophetess… of the tribe of Aser.” ()

Anna recognized the infant Jesus in the Temple and praised God for sending the promised Messiah, making her one of the first recorded witnesses to Christ’s arrival.

The history of the Tribe of Asher demonstrates God’s blessing, provision, and faithfulness. Its fertile inheritance fulfilled prophetic promises, and its descendants remained participants in God’s covenant purposes from the conquest of Canaan through the coming of the Messiah.
