Naphtali was the sixth son of Jacob and the second son born to Bilhah, the handmaid of Rachel. Before his birth, Rachel continued to struggle with her sister Leah, who had borne several sons to Jacob. When Bilhah bore a second son, Rachel declared:

“With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed.” ()

For this reason, she named him Naphtali (נַפְתָּלִי, Naphtali), a name associated with wrestling, struggle, or contest.

Naphtali became the founder of the Tribe of Naphtali, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. During Israel’s wilderness journey, the tribe grew into a significant and capable military force. The descendants of Naphtali camped on the north side of the Tabernacle alongside the tribes of Dan and Asher ().

Before his death, Jacob pronounced a blessing over Naphtali:

“Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.” ()

The imagery of a deer released into freedom suggests swiftness, grace, and liberty. Many interpreters understand this blessing as describing the tribe’s independence, agility, and ability to prosper within its appointed inheritance.

When the land of Canaan was divided among the tribes, Naphtali received territory in the fertile northern region near the Sea of Galilee (). This area possessed abundant natural resources and became an important part of Israel’s northern frontier.

The tribe of Naphtali played a prominent role during the period of the Judges. When Deborah and Barak called Israel to battle against the forces of Sisera, warriors from Naphtali answered the call with courage and faith:

“Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death.” ()

The tribe’s willingness to fight helped secure victory over Israel’s oppressors and demonstrated devotion to God’s deliverance.

Centuries later, the territory of Naphtali gained even greater significance during the ministry of Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah foretold that light would come to the region of Zebulun and Naphtali:

“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.” ()

The Gospel of Matthew identifies this prophecy as being fulfilled through the ministry of Jesus in Galilee (). As a result, the land once inherited by Naphtali became one of the primary settings of Christ’s earthly ministry.

The life of Naphtali and the history of his tribe demonstrate how God can transform struggle into blessing. Though his name originated from conflict and wrestling, his descendants became instruments in God’s plan and witnesses to the coming of the promised Messiah.
