Dan was the fifth son of Jacob and the first son born to Bilhah, the handmaid of Rachel. Unable to bear children at the time, Rachel gave Bilhah to Jacob, and Dan was born through this arrangement. Upon his birth, Rachel declared:

“God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son.” ()

For this reason, she named him Dan (דָּן, Dan), meaning “Judge” or “He has judged.”

Dan became the ancestor of the Tribe of Dan, one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. During Israel’s wilderness journey, the tribe grew into a large and influential group. When the tribes camped around the Tabernacle, Dan occupied a prominent position on the north side and marched with considerable military strength ().

Before his death, Jacob pronounced a prophetic blessing upon Dan:

“Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.” ()

Jacob continued by comparing Dan to a serpent lying in wait along a path (). These prophetic words have been interpreted in various ways, often emphasizing both Dan’s ability to exercise judgment and the tribe’s tendency toward unexpected or unconventional actions.

Following the conquest of Canaan, the tribe of Dan initially received territory near the Mediterranean coast (). However, the Danites struggled to fully possess their inheritance because of opposition from neighboring peoples. As a result, part of the tribe later migrated northward and conquered the city of Laish, renaming it Dan ().

The tribe’s history took a troubling turn during the period of the Judges. The Danites established a center of idolatrous worship after taking a carved image and appointing their own priest:

“And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made.” ()

This event became one of the earliest examples of organized idolatry within Israel and foreshadowed later spiritual decline.

Despite these failures, Dan remained one of Israel’s recognized tribes throughout much of biblical history. The phrase “from Dan even to Beersheba” frequently appears in Scripture as a description of the entire land of Israel, stretching from its northernmost to southernmost regions (; ).

The life of Dan and the history of his tribe illustrate both privilege and responsibility. Though blessed as part of God’s covenant people, the tribe’s later compromises demonstrate the dangers of departing from God’s truth. Dan’s account reminds believers that spiritual faithfulness is more important than military strength, influence, or prosperity.
