The Tribes of Israel were the twelve tribal divisions of the nation of Israel, descended from the twelve sons of Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel by God:

“Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel.” ()

From these twelve sons came the families, clans, and tribes that would become the covenant nation chosen by God. The tribes served as the foundational structure of Israel’s society, inheritance system, military organization, and worship practices throughout the Old Testament.

The twelve sons of Jacob were:

  1. Reuben
  2. Simeon
  3. Levi
  4. Judah
  5. Dan
  6. Naphtali
  7. Gad
  8. Asher
  9. Issachar
  10. Zebulun
  11. Joseph
  12. Benjamin

These sons were born to Jacob through Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah (Genesis 29-30; ).

When Israel entered the Promised Land under Joshua, most of the tribes received territorial inheritances. The tribe of Levi was unique because the Levites were set apart for priestly and temple service and did not receive a large tribal territory like the others:

“The LORD God of Israel was their inheritance.” ()

Because the Levites received a special role in worship, the inheritance of Joseph was commonly divided between his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, preserving the number twelve among the tribal allotments.

Among the tribes, Judah became especially significant because God promised that the royal line would come through Judah:

“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah.” ()

From the tribe of Judah came King David, and ultimately the Messiah, Jesus Christ, fulfilling God’s covenant promises.

The tribe of Levi likewise held a unique position because from Levi came Aaron, Moses, and the priesthood. The Levites were entrusted with the care of the Tabernacle, later the Temple, and the teaching of God’s Law throughout Israel.

Following the reign of Solomon, the kingdom divided into two nations. The northern kingdom retained the name Israel and consisted primarily of ten tribes, while the southern kingdom of Judah was composed chiefly of Judah, Benjamin, and many members of Levi (). This division became one of the most significant events in Israel’s history.

Throughout Scripture, the tribes symbolize both God’s covenant faithfulness and the unity of His people. Even in prophetic visions, the tribes continue to appear prominently. The Book of Revelation speaks of twelve thousand individuals being sealed from each tribe of Israel (), demonstrating their continuing importance in God’s redemptive plan.

The history of the Tribes of Israel reveals how God worked through families, generations, and covenant promises to preserve a people through whom He would reveal His Word and bring forth the promised Messiah.
