Repentance is the act of turning away from sin and turning toward God with a sincere desire to follow His will. In Scripture, repentance involves more than feeling sorry for wrongdoing. It is a change of heart and mind that results in a changed life. When Jesus began His public ministry, He proclaimed, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (), emphasizing repentance as a necessary response to God’s truth.

Throughout the Bible, God repeatedly calls people to repent and return to Him. The Lord declared through the prophet Ezekiel, “Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions” (), showing that repentance involves turning away from sinful behavior and choosing the path of obedience. Likewise, John the Baptist preached “the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins” (), preparing people for the coming of Christ.

Repentance is closely connected to faith and salvation. After Christ’s resurrection, Peter urged the people, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out” (). This demonstrates that repentance is not a work that earns salvation, but the natural response of a heart that recognizes its need for God’s mercy and forgiveness.

The Apostle Paul explained that “godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation” (). While sorrow for sin may lead a person toward repentance, true repentance goes further by producing a genuine desire to follow God and forsake sin. Scripture teaches that God is patient and merciful, “not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance” ().

For believers, repentance is not merely a one-time act associated with salvation. It remains an important part of the Christian life as God’s people continually seek His forgiveness, correction, and guidance. Through repentance, believers grow in their relationship with God and pursue a life that reflects His righteousness.
