Adonai (אֲדֹנָי) is one of the most important titles for God in the Hebrew Scriptures. It means “Lord,” “Master,” or “Ruler,” but unlike Adoni, this form is never used for humans. It is reserved solely for the God of Israel.

Because the divine name YHWH was considered too holy to pronounce casually, Israel used Adonai when reading Scripture aloud. This practice preserved reverence for God’s name while emphasizing His absolute authority.

The title appears throughout the Old Testament in moments of covenant, worship, and divine encounter. Abraham addresses God as Adonai when receiving the promise of a son (). Moses calls God Adonai when pleading for help (). David repeatedly uses Adonai in his prayers and psalms, acknowledging God’s kingship and rule (; ).

The distinction between Adonai and Adoni becomes crucial in , the passage Jesus uses in :

“YHWH said to my Adoni…”

Here, Adonai is the divine speaker (YHWH), and Adoni is the Messiah whom David calls “my lord.” This contrast reveals:

  • Adonai = the eternal God
  • Adoni = the Messiah, David’s sovereign descendant

The New Testament later applies the Greek equivalent Kyrios to Jesus, identifying Him as Adonai — the divine Lord who shares the Father’s throne, receives worship, and exercises cosmic authority.

Theologically, Adonai emphasizes:

  • God’s absolute sovereignty
  • His ownership of creation
  • His authority to command, judge, and save
  • His covenant relationship with Israel
  • The divine identity of the Messiah revealed in the New Testament

Because Adonai expresses God’s divine lordship, it naturally highlights several core realities:

  • Means “Lord” in the divine sense
  • Used exclusively for God in Scripture
  • Spoken as a reverent substitute for YHWH
  • Appears in covenant, worship, and prophetic texts
  • Contrasts with Adoni in
  • Reveals the Messiah’s divine identity when applied to Jesus as Kyrios
