Why Discernment Must Begin with Christ

In a world filled with competing truth claims, persuasive voices, and conflicting worldviews, discernment is not optional for the follower of Christ. Every belief, teaching, philosophy, and spiritual message ultimately rests upon an authority that determines what is accepted as true. Scripture directs believers away from self-reliance and toward a firmer foundation by grounding discernment in the person of Jesus Christ. Rather than treating truth as something each individual defines for himself, the Christian faith identifies truth as objective, knowable, and ultimately revealed in Christ. For this reason, any biblical understanding of discernment must begin by recognizing who Jesus is and why His authority governs every other claim to truth.

Jesus embodies truth.

Because Jesus embodies liberating truth, our discernment must begin with trusting Him rather than ourselves (; ). Every person interprets the world through a lens shaped by experience, emotions, and limited understanding, making human judgment an unreliable ultimate authority. Jesus, however, stands apart from all human teachers by claiming to be “the truth,” not merely one who possesses it. If His claim is true, then He becomes the objective standard by which all competing truth claims must be evaluated. True discernment is therefore Christ-centered rather than self-centered. Instead of elevating our reasoning above His revelation, we allow His teachings and the God-breathed Scriptures that testify about Him to shape our understanding. In doing so, we are protected from deception and led into the freedom that comes from knowing reality as God defines it.

Jesus alone is the way.

Jesus identifies Himself as truth and the only way to the Father, excluding competing paths (). In an age that celebrates religious pluralism and subjective truth, Christ’s words present a direct challenge to the belief that contradictory claims can all be equally valid. He does not claim to know the way or teach a way, but to be the way itself. Likewise, He does not merely possess truth but embodies it. Such statements force a decision: either Jesus was mistaken, deceptive, or exactly who He claimed to be. If He is who He claimed to be, then every competing path to God must ultimately be rejected in favor of His exclusive authority. For this reason, Christian discernment begins not by comparing Christ to other options but by recognizing Him as the standard against which all other truth claims are measured.

We need liberation from deception.

His promise of freedom exposes our fallen condition: we need liberation, not merely additional information (). Modern culture often assumes that humanity’s greatest problem is ignorance and that the solution is greater access to knowledge. Jesus presents a radically different diagnosis. He teaches that people are in bondage and therefore require freedom, not simply education. The issue is not merely that we fail to recognize truth, but that sin distorts our thinking, affections, and desires, preventing us from naturally submitting to it. For this reason, truth alone is not enough unless it is accompanied by the liberating work of Christ. Genuine discernment flows from this understanding. We do not approach truth as neutral observers gathering data, but as fallen people who need a Savior to free us from the deception and self-dependence that cloud our judgment and separate us from God.

Discernment must be grounded in Christ’s authority

This supports the thesis by grounding our rejection of deception in Christ’s authority and liberating power (; ). Discernment is not ultimately rooted in human intuition, intellectual ability, or personal experience, but in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Because He is the truth, His authority provides the objective standard by which all claims, teachings, and spiritual influences must be measured. Because He sets people free through the truth, He also provides the means by which deception can be recognized and overcome. This moves discernment beyond mere skepticism or critical thinking and places it within a biblical framework of submission to Christ. Believers reject falsehood not because they trust their own judgment above all else, but because they trust the One who cannot deceive and cannot be deceived. As a result, the pursuit of truth and the rejection of error become inseparable from a growing knowledge of and obedience to Christ.

Part 1 Conclusion

These truths establish the essential foundation of biblical discernment. Because Jesus is the truth, the only way to the Father, and the One who liberates people from deception and spiritual bondage, all true discernment must begin with Him. Yet acknowledging Christ as the foundation raises an important question: By what standard are His followers to evaluate the countless teachings, claims, and influences they encounter? If discernment depends upon Christ’s authority rather than our own understanding, believers need a reliable and objective means by which His truth is known, applied, and defended. This brings us naturally to the role of God’s Word, which Scripture presents as the divinely inspired and authoritative standard for testing all things, explained in Part 2: Why Scripture Must Govern Discernment.
