Hannah was the mother of the prophet Samuel and is remembered in Scripture for her faithfulness, perseverance in prayer, and devotion to God. Her account is recorded primarily in the opening chapters of 1 Samuel, where she serves as an example of trusting the Lord during times of sorrow and waiting.

Hannah was one of the two wives of Elkanah, but she was unable to bear children. Her barrenness caused her great grief, especially because she was continually provoked by Peninnah, Elkanah’s other wife (). Despite her distress, Hannah turned to God in prayer rather than abandoning her faith. While worshiping at Shiloh, she prayed earnestly, asking the Lord for a son and promising to dedicate him to God’s service ().

The Lord answered Hannah’s prayer, and she gave birth to Samuel, whose name means “heard of God” or “asked of God” (). Remaining faithful to her vow, Hannah later brought Samuel to the house of the Lord and entrusted him to the service of God under Eli the priest ().

Following the dedication of Samuel, Hannah offered a prayer of praise recorded in . Her prayer exalts God’s holiness, sovereignty, justice, and power. She declared, “There is none holy as the LORD” () and rejoiced in the Lord’s deliverance. Many themes found in Hannah’s prayer echo throughout Scripture and are later reflected in Mary’s Magnificat in .

Hannah’s life demonstrates the power of persistent prayer, faithful obedience, and trust in God’s timing. Though she endured years of disappointment and sorrow, she remained steadfast in seeking the Lord. Because of her faithfulness, she is remembered as one of the Bible’s most notable examples of a godly woman and devoted mother.
